Netflix Instant Gems Vol. 28

Just a few quick notes with this list. I am pleased that one can now enjoy quite the festival of 70s disaster films should they so choose(and they should). Recently added are 3 of the 4 AIRPORT films(sadly no CONCORDE). I've always been partial to AIRPORT '77 for some reason. Might be Jack Lemmon. I threw a few other disaster favorites on the list as well. A couple Hawks films here too. SCARFACE is an obvious classic of sorts. I WAS A MALE WAR BRIDE is a lighter Hawks comedy, but worth viewing. Also check out AT CLOSE RANGE, BATTLEGROUND, both CONAN films, and DUTCH(which always felt like a lost John Hughes film to me as it was written by him and has his voice). Oh and a few interesting docs as well. FORKS OVER KNIVES is a pretty eye opening revelation of a film. VANISHING OF THE BEES is also interesting.

ZERO EFFECT(1998; Jake Kasdan)

THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE is pretty awesome in its way... some people might find the Eric Roberts character pretty annoying. I really dug it, then read the novel it was based on, and dug that too.

And AT CLOSE RANGE is another '80s crime gem that should be rediscovered.

At Close Range is very underrated. The Burrowers and Big Trouble In Little China are very entertaining. Kurt Russell at his best!

The 1932 SCARFACE rules. So much better than the remake. Highly recommended by me. Paul Muni gives a performance for the ages and Howard Hawks proves how versatile a director he was. So glad to see this on Instant now.

some great films there. love lee grant in 'airport '77' and also brenda vaccaro. 'earthquake' and 'inferno' are such classics as well. haven't seen 'smoke' in a while but loved it as a teenager.

I know you're thrilled about all those Airport films! They were a staple of my childhood. Some good titles and some I've been wanting to see. Thanks!

Love SMOKE. Such a wonderful gem of a film. Its companion film, BLUE IN THE FACE is also pretty cool, too - if only for Jim Jarmusch's thoughts on smoking in movies.

Will-Yeah I can see how folks might feel that way about Roberts in the film. I did for sure the 1st time. Need to check out that book. I really love AT CLOSE RANGE a lot. Very underseen these days.

TY-Kurt Russell is one of my all time heroes.

HAL-I haven't seen SCARFACE in more than a decade. I am very excited to rewatch. Hawks has a bunch on Instant now which is always nice to see.
MRJ-I love me some disaster films for sure. I have TOWERING INFERNO on blu, but I want them all that way. EARTHQUAKE is an absolute riot.
SLEESTAK-My pleasure sir, let me know what you see and enjoy of the list!

JD-I love that Jarmusch scene in BLUE IN THE FACE. The smoking bit is great as is his bit about characters throwing guns away when they run out of ammo in films. Always thought that was very funny.

Wow, really like Scarface on there, and Barcelona I haven't seen since it was in the theater. Great list, as always.

I love me some AIRPORT '77.

Some good treats in there. Barcelona. Really good. Pope, of course. Zero Effect is the very definition of a sleeper. I miss prime Bill Pullman.

I tried watching LAST HARD MEN, but the transfer is blurry pan and scan dogshit. Hopefully it gets a DVD release in the US (I guess it got a release in Spain, for some reason). Heston + Coburn + Parks = at least entertaining.

I'm not as big a disaster movie fan as you are (then again, no one is), but EARTHQUAKE is my easily my favorite. It pretty much follows the formula, so I'm not quite sure why I like it so much more than, say, THE TOWERING INFERNO. Maybe it's the cast.

DTVC-Thanks Kindly!
MEEP-I totally agree re: ZERO EFFECT. Needs more love. I have to show this one to my son soon as part of our ongoing Friday movie night series.
THOMAS-Bummer about LAST HARD MEN. It is a sad fact that a small percentage of these films are shitty transfers and wrong aspect ratios. Truly sad.I love both TOWERING and EARTHQUAKE. Maybe TOWERING a bit more at the moment, but EARTHQUAKE is top 2 or 3 for me. I even have a spanish TERRA MOTO poster in my home.
TY-Yessir the check is in the mail.
