Netflix Instant "Gems" Vol. 21: Silent Gems

A bunch of Buster Keaton films popped up this week(many in HD!) so I thought I'd take this opportunity to highlight some fantastic silent films that can currently be viewed by you instantly. Of the Keaton's SHERLOCK JR. and THE NAVIGATOR are my favorites, but I wholeheartedly recommend all of them listed below. Good for kids too by the way. I was surprised how my kids were engaged by Keaton's films. Lots of other silent goodies here too though, dig in!

THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI(1919; Robert Wiene)
COLLEGE(1927; James W. Horne)
THE GENERAL(1926; Clyde Bruckman/Buster Keaton)
GO WEST(1925; Buster Keaton)
INTOLERANCE(1916; D.W. Griffith)
THE LAST LAUGH(1924; F.W. Murnau)
MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA(1929; Dziga Vertov)

METROPOLIS(Restored)(1927; Fritz Lang)

THE NAVIGATOR(1924; Donald Crisp/Buster Keaton)

NOSFERATU(1929; F.W. Murnau)

OUR HOSPITALITY(1923; John G. Blystone/Buster Keaton)
PANDORA'S BOX
(1929; George Wilhelm Pabst)
THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC(1928; Carl Theodor Dreyer)

SEVEN CHANCES(1925; Buster Keaton)
SHERLOCK JR.(1924; Buster Keaton)

STEAMBOAT BILL JR.(1928; Charles Reisner/Buster Keaton)

UN CHIEN ANDALOU(1929; Luis Bunuel)

Thanks for the heads up on the HD Keatons. I have that Metropolis Kino Blu-ray and it looks amazing.

I've seen all of those except "College." The General is an incredible masterpiece, as is The passion of Joan of Arc (done almost entirely in close-up!) - actually, it's kinda hard to pick out a dud on that list! I watched Un Chien Andalou 15 times, to figure out how they did the eyeball scene (pretty obvious once you know).

Thomas- I really wanna pick up those Keaton Blu-rays that Kino put out, but the HD versions on Netflix will do for now.

Steve-COLLEGE is not bad, I think you'd like. I agree re: CHIEN. You can totally see it once you know.

Hi, I just stumbled upon this post while I was googling for Robert Weine films. Can you tell me which film is the second image from? Instantly reminds one of 2001: A Space Odyssey! Great list, by the way.

Thank you! That 2nd image of Buster Keaton is from THE NAVIGATOR, which I like a lot.
